Exciting? Scary? Neither word can be discounted from the way in which we must all inevitably be feeling about the digitalisation of our world. This video brought to you by Coring is a prime example of one of those ‘hoverboard’ moments. One in which your operational self either arouses or diminishes into a intimidated worthlessness. Either way, this Minority Report-esque future is on it’s way. Let just be thankful it doesn’t include with it Tom Cruise.

So we ventured down to The Rook and Raven gallery last night on Rathbone Place in W1 to see the opening of David Walker‘s first London solo exhibit.

Will has known David for a while and has done his new website to be launched soon so we thought we best not give it a miss. In short, it was breathtaking. Using only spray cans, he develops such strong female portraits that ooze through every spec of paint a onslaught of emotion which just couldn’t be more striking. There’s little more that can be said to justify his work other than to get yourself down to the gallery at some stage over the next few months and check it out for yourself. Regret nothing but you certainly won’t regret this.

Tom Cledwyn

We were recently asked by our good friends at Find Invest Grow to write an article for the Independent’s ‘Young Entrepreneur’ section. Given free range to come up with a topic, we decided that discussing what role ‘Choice’ played in our work and our process may be an interesting starting point. Perhaps interesting isn’t the right word but it would be great to hear your thoughts.

Tom Cledwyn

It’s difficult not to spend hours on TED’s website. One talk turns into three or four and all of a sudden you’re behind or late for whatever it is you’re really meant to be doing but at least with procrastination of this form you come away more informed. More interesting.

Amongst the thousands of talks available, there are some real gems specifically for designers. Here, we’ve tried to give you 5 talks (in no particular order) that will give you something to think about in preparation for yet another fast approaching working week.

1. Charles Limb: Your brain on improv.

Researcher, musician and surgeon, Charles Limb, pursues how the brain and creativity are related through scientific studies of improvising musicians.

Artistic creativity is a neurologic product that can be examined using rigorous scientific methods

2. Don Norman on 3 ways good design makes you happy

This talk by Don Norman from 2003 looks at design that makes people happy.

3. Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity

Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity. A really entertaining talk this one.

If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you will never come up with anything original

4. Rory Sutherland: Life lessons from an ad man

Advertising adds value to a product by changing our perception, rather than the product itself. Rory Sutherland (Executive Creative Director and Vice-Chairman, OgilvyOne London and Vice-Chairman, Ogilvy Group) makes the daring assertion that a change in perceived value can be just as satisfying as what we consider “real” value — and his conclusion has interesting consequences for how we look at life.

Another good talk from Rory called ‘Sweat the small stuff’ can be seen here.

5. Sunni Brown: Doodlers, unite!

Studies show that sketching and doodling improve our comprehension — and our creative thinking. So why do we still feel embarrassed when we’re caught doodling in a meeting? Sunni Brown says: Doodlers, unite! She makes the case for unlocking your brain via pad and pen.

Doodling has a profound impact on the way that we can process information and the way that we can solve problems.

Go on. One more! Hans Rosling shows the best stats you’ve ever seen.

Hans Rosling gave this talk in 2006 and although not strictly relevant to you designers it has become one of TED’s most viewed talks. He debunks some myths of the so called ‘developing world’ as well as how statistics can actually be fun.

Siri was founded in 2007 by Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer, and Tom Gruber, and Norman Winarsky and after two rounds of funding was bought by Apple in April 2010. The latest iPhone launch may have disappointed many – but check out how Apple’s purchase is being put to use and how it could play a role in your life…..

“Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it. The world has lost a visionary.”

Barack Obama, 2011

As the tributes pour in for the most influential technologists the world has ever seen, we wanted to share one of Steve Job’s speeches from 2005, at Stanford University. He changed the way in which we interact with our world through his foresight and ability to understand what people wanted and needed.

Will Donoghue – Latest member of Mylo Design

Within the last couple of months I have traded the quiet life of a freelance designer in Cambridge for the hustle and bustle of central London. Working beneath the railway arches off Rivington St you will now find me tucked away behind the night club Cargo on in Archway 462 next to the Black Rat Press.

Why you ask? Well, when an opportunity stares you in the face you just have to go for it sometimes. I had been planning the move down to London for a while, it seems like the only thing to do if I want to progress as a designer in this country. Anyhow, after working with Mylo Design on several projects the last couple of years and engineering my time to spend more hours in London working on larger contracts it naturally evolved, the relationship between Albi Design and Mylo Design had been forged and we were working together well. We all realised that this was harmonious, the work was flying in and we were churning it out so we have now combined our powers much like that of ‘Captain Planet’ to create a super team, the new Mylo Design! Cheers to Tom and Ben for having me on board and making me feel welcome.

“when an opportunity stares you in the face you just have to go for it sometimes”

Seeing as this place is new to me I wanted to put up a few snaps of the area, there is sooo much going on and I’m finding it inspiring, first impressions of this area is that I really am in the centre of creativity and I’m loving it. The street art on the walls change on a weekly basis and this is encouraged, seems funny that the day I pop out with a camera to take some snaps of the area there is graffiti on Great Eastern Street based on 200AD comic character Judge Dredd, this is the very same reason I got in to art and design in the first place, I spent hours in the early 90′s with a biro or pencil drawing my favourite characters from my latest copy of the graphic novel, I still have them now!

Looks like this is my new stomping ground for now, I look forward to the next year and growing the team.

Ben Aldred

Being a newbie to having a personal website, it got me thinking about when it becomes necessary for a person to have an online presence beyond their profiles on social and professional networks such as Facebook and Linkedin.

Obviously lots of creative professionals have their own personal website as it showcases their talents and helps them get work. More interestingly though is the rise of personal profile pages in other industries. Services like about.me, flavors.me, vizualize.me and zerply.com allow anyone to create stunning pages that can aggregate all of your online profiles into one place. Team this up with your own domain name and within 20 minutes anyone can have a pretty compelling personal site.

The ability to customise your page and not have it look shit (myspace anyone?) is what sets these services apart. And anyone can do it. Where it becomes useful for an ‘anyone’ is the chance to sell yourself to an employer. Much in the same way that a designer’s portfolio showcases examples of their work, a personal website is a 21st century CV for any person applying for a job. Not only can you provide all of the standard information necessary to show you are qualified, you can also show how interesting and knowledgable you are through blogging, link sharing and through your connections.

Given the obvious benefits of this, i can see a real trend developing towards a more holistic approach to self promotion in order to gain the favour of potential employers. Something that up until now has only really been exploited by the creative community.
